What To Check Before You Call
HVAC systems can be complex. Our skilled technicians have the experience and know how to keep your AC systems running smoothly, but we want you to know that in some cases there are simple ac repairs you can do before you bring in the pros. More often than not, ac repair contractors are called to fix minor issues such as these:
– Check Your Thermostat
The most obvious starting point is to check the temperature settings of your wall thermostat. If your thermostat is off or the room temperature is satisfying the thermostat, your heating and cooling system will not run.
– The system is not running at all.
Most of the time, when a HVAC system suddenly goes quiet, it’s due to a lack of electric power. In this case, you should check your breakers. If the breakers are on, then move on to the heater and chek to make sure the emergency switch is turned on.
– I hear the fan running but the air is not cool and the outside unit is off.
First, check for a tripped breaker in the panel. If not clearly marked, look for a double pole breaker and make sure it’s on.
Next, check along the thin wire between the heater and the outside condenser; if the wire is not insulated at any point, wrap the exposed wires with electrical tape to insulate it, and replace a small fuse at the heater’s circuit board.
– I hear the fan running and outside unit is running, but the air is not cool.
This service should be left to our service techs. Your coolant may need replacing. By law, the old coolant must be recovered and taken away. If it escapes, it depletes the ozone layer. Another possibility is that the compressor or starting capacitor may need to be replaced. Both should be left to the pros.
– There is ice on the outside condenser or the inside coil Is frozen.
If your filter is clogged, the system can not breathe to remove heat, and the coils freeze.
When did you last replace your air filter? Look for the easy access panel on your heater and pull the air filter out, wait two hours and see if the ice has melted. If it doesn’t, check around your house and confirm that all of your supply and return vents are open and not blocked.
